The next iPhone leaked by gizmodo

In case you have been out of the loop for the last few weeks, a developer working on the new Apple iPhone 4.0 accidentally left a prototype of the device at a bar in Redwood City Washington. After a unsuspecting bystander found the phone, he attempted to contact Apple before he sold it to Gizmodo for $5000. Once the tech blog got ahold of the device, they disassembled it and revealed what are likely to be a few of its new features. We have listed the most important ones below.

1.) Front facing video camera. You can expect the new iPhone to have a camera for video conferencing. Gizmodo's editor made a point of mentioning the camera's increased size. It will probably support 1080 by 720p HD video resolutions, an option that will excite those looking for a solid video camera in addition to their new phone.

2.) A better screen. When Gizmodo's editor attempted to use the iPhone 4.0, he noticed that the iTunes loader icon had a much more crisp resolution than the icon on the current iPhone 3GS. Although nobody knows exactly what the new screen resolution will be, it's a reasonable guess to assume it will be 960 by 640, similar to most of the rumors floating around.

3.) Bigger battery. The new battery for the iPhone 4.0 takes up 16% more of the space inside the chassis. Every other component in the device has been shrunk down to create more space for the battery. All of this makes sense as Apple moves to include more power consuming components such as the video camera and higher resolution screen.

From what we have seen, the new cell phone will be unlike any model we have seen from Apple so far. It's a shame the next stevenote won't come as much of a surprise.

How will Skype change the mobile world?

Skype is a mobile VOIP service that allows computer and cell phone users to make phone calls over the Internet at a much cheaper price than a traditional calling plan. As more people realize its fantastic money saving potential, the service is becoming more popular than ever. This has many network providers shaking in their boots and wondering what it will mean for the future of their businesses. How will people be using this revolutionary service in the next five years?

Apple currently blocks services like Skype over its AT&T powered 3G connection. You can use the service as much as you want while you are at home and running on a wifi connection, but as soon as you leave the house and get on the grid, you have to place your calls through AT&T. Many heavy Skype users have demanded 3G support for the service, but that is very unlikely when you consider the huge stake AT&T has in it.

However, if you own an iDevice and are looking for a somewhat cheap workaround, you will find one with the portable MIFI device. It uses a cellular connection and functions as a wifi hotspot that you can use anywhere you go. The MIFI effectively bypasses Apple's 'no VOIP over a 3G connection' rule by using a wifi connection in its place. And, as an added bonus, the MIFI can be used for all of your other devices including your laptop and iPod touch. They can be purchased with or without a contract, and most services are available for around 40 dollars a month.

We expect to see more options like the MIFI in the coming years as people move away from the traditional networks and accept a more web-centric communication model. What a great day that will be!

Knockoff models are keepin' it real fake

If you've taken a trip to China recently, you may have noticed all of the cheap high-end cell phone knockoffs. Thanks to poorly enforced copyright laws, knockoff devices usually hit the markets a few weeks before the real devices are released. These devices look so strikingly similar to their real counterparts that we can see how it would be easy to be fooled.

An early iPhone 4.0?
The GiphoneF98 appeared on the market just a few weeks after Gizmodo leaked the Apple iPhone 4.0 prototype. It looks just like the new iPhone, complete with the separate volume control buttons, a front facing camera, and flush design. It also features dual SIM cards and an FM radio.

If you look closely, you can see what appears to be a fake version of iPhone OS. According to the journalists who got their hands on this beauty, it is one of thickest phones they have ever held. You can purchase one for $150, assuming fake iPhones are your thing.

The iHTC HD Too
Another company by the name of iHTC, and having absolutely nothing to do with HTC, has released its own version of the HTC HD2 cell phone. This cheap knockoff doesn't even bother to recreate the bigger screen that the HD2 is so well known for. Instead of getting a 4.3 inch display, you get a paltry 3.6 inch one. This lackluster knockoff will set you back $230 should you dare to take a trip to China to get one.

As you travel through the markets of Shenzen China, you get the feeling that nobody there has actually used any of the real devices they are imitating. It's a real shame, because if they could, they would give up the knockoff business for good.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of an Unlocked Motorola Droid Phone

The prospect of an unlocked Motorola phone might seem a little odd. Android OS is supposed to be open source, isn’t it? While Android is a much more open platform than Apple’s iPhone OS, users still aren’t given all of the privileges. This results in what some might consider limited functionality. There are some things an unlocked Droid phone can do that an ordinary Droid phone cannot. These features might be worth it if you are willing to spend a lot of extra time digging into the guts of your phone while risking the chance that you might accidentally turn your Droid into a brick.

We won’t lecture you on the obvious concerns we have with any plan to unlock a mobile device like the Droid. We figure you already know enough about it. Instead of doing that, we want to present you with some of the features you will gain from unlocked cell phones. Knowing what these are, you can decide whether it is worth it or not.

1.) Multitouch and gesture based controls
The Motorola Milestone already has it. Why shouldn’t you? Unlocking will allow you to add these highly intuitive controls to your Droid, making all of your friends with ordinary Droid phones jealous. A multitouch UI lets you to pinch and zoom, rotate, and do whatever else you can get your grubby fingers on. A word of caution, though. The Droid isn’t exactly optimized for multitouch, so a multitouch implementation on the device might be a little clunky.

2.) Customizable user interface
A lot of people complain that their smartphone, whether it’s an iPhone, a Droid, or anything else, simply doesn’t give them all that many customization options. When you unlock a Droid, you can download custom themes or even make your own. It’s an artsy way to express your inner geek.

3.) Internet tethering
Do you want to use that 3G connection to access the web on your laptop? No problem. Tethering turns your Motorola Droid into a modem that you can then access via Bluetooth. This is pretty nice if you don’t want to purchase a separate 3G data plan for your laptop while you’re on the go. This is arguably the strongest reason you would want to unlock a Droid. It could save you money if you’re willing to risk a little and invest the time.

Some people need to control everything. If you’re one of them, you might want to consider unlocking your Droid phone. Undoubtedly, if enough people want a new feature, it will be included in some future OS release. Just give it time and enjoy your phone without giving yourself any headaches. The Droid is an awesome device, unlocked or not.

What an unlocked iPhone can do for you

Ever since the iPhone was released, people have complained about Apple’s restrictions. While many see the iPhone as a “walled garden” that’s easy to use without any errors, others see it as a prison. They look at the outside world where mobile devices can multitask and run apps that aren’t approved by Apple, and they want to break free. Those who wish to escape Apple’s restrictions have taken to unlocked cell phones, opening up a whole new world of apps and possibilities. The following are a few of them.

1.) iPhonemodem
iPhonemodem is an app that turns your iPhone into a modem for your laptop. It’s great for long road trips and business on the go when you don’t have a good wifi signal. Plus, if you’re already paying for 3G on your iPhone, why should you pay for it twice on another portable device? When you look at the savings, unlocking your iPhone to get this app just makes good economic sense.

2.) Custom Themes
You may have noticed that the iPhone isn’t all that customizable. Sure, you can switch out the background image, but that’s not the same as being able to control the complete look and feel. After you jailbreak your iPhone, you get access to a ton of custom themes to suit your style. Consider it a fashion upgrade.

3.) Free custom ringtones and notification sounds
Yet another way you are unable to customize a standard iPhone. With an unlocked iPhone, you can download as many of these custom sounds as you want.

4.) Using VOIP over a 3G connection
Due to Apple’s contract with AT&T, it’s bad business for Apple to allow you to use VOIP over a 3G connection. When you unlock your iPhone, you bypass this restriction altogether. If you change some of your calling habits and decide to only place calls using VOIP, you can save a ton of money on your next phone bill.

5.) It’s a necessary precursor to unlocking your phone
Or you can go one step further and unlock your phone completely. Jailbreaking gives you the tools to do this and use whichever carrier you want. Also, if you plan on reselling your iPhone, you’ll be happy to know that unlocked iPhones have a higher resell value.

If there’s one big reason to unlock your iPhone, it’s because it will save you money. When you aren’t chained to AT&T, you get better service and the ability to make VOIP calls over a 3G signal. Imagine only having to pay your Skype bill every month, not AT&T’s. On top of that, you get custom themes, apps, and ringtones. There are a few risks involved in the process. You will void the warranty, and there is a very small chance of irreversible damage. We still think that when you weigh all the risks and the huge benefit you get on the other end, unlocking your iPhone is definitely worth it.

PhoneSale.com Review

Though PhoneSale.com has been in business for a while now, reviews regarding our service and website are scant. We have testimonials posted on our site and thanks to our Twitter, we have at least one Twitterer (Tweeter? Tweeple?) who is very satisfied with the phones we sell. I decided to give a little more information about our operation in hopes of inspiring a bit more consumer confidence.

Products and Pricing
We currently carry over two hundred models of locked and unlocked cell phones. All are brand new unless otherwise noted in the title as being factory refurbished. I've personally added most of the cell phones on our site and pull information either directly from the manufacturer's website or from other reliable cell phone resources. We only purchase cell phones from authorized dealers which means none of our merchandise comes from the black market...a problem that you'd undoubtedly run into if you buy phones from craigslist or eBay. We do our very best to keep our prices competitive with other online retailers, sometimes selling phones at a loss. I periodically do a price comparison with other sites and adjust prices down when necessary.

Customer Service
Our customer service team is available five days a week to answer e-mail queries about specific cell phones or the service we provide. Though turnaround on those e-mails are very quick, I encourage shoppers to fan us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter and ask questions/make comments there because I personally maintain these accounts, am very knowledgeable about our operation and cell phones in general, and will likely be able to get back to you within a few hours (I check on our Facebook/Twitter at home after work and a few times on the weekends). Our general FAQ regarding our site and ordering is informative, as is our technical FAQ which directly addresses questions many people have about unlocked cell phones.

Shipping
Orders typically ship out within 48 business hours of being placed. All orders are shipped free via USPS First Class and faster delivery services are available at a flat rate.

Free Stuff
In an effort to increase awareness and inspire some confidence, I've been giving away free car chargers to Facebook fans and Twitter followers who RT @buycellphones. I've shipped out almost 50 chargers and still have more love to give. We'll also be running other promotions and giveaways, so stay tuned. (:
